With Christmas just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start thinking of decorative ideas for your home. However, this year, rather than just sticking with the traditional ornaments (a tree, lights around the roof, etc.), we think that you should start thinking outside the box.

Fortunately, there is an endless variety of creative Christmas decorations out there, so all it takes is a little elbow grease and ingenuity to turn your house into a festive winter wonderland.

With that in mind, I’m going to show you the best Christmas decoration ideas I’ve discovered. These are all guaranteed to add joy and holiday spirit to your home. Feel free to do as many or as few as you like; there are no wrong answers here.

Top 20 Christmas Decoration Ideas

#1 Gifts Everywhere!

This is the season of giving, so why not accentuate that part of the holiday by wrapping empty boxes and placing them around your house. Just make sure that your kids know which ones are real and which are decorative.

The best thing about this type of decor is that you can use them over and over again. Also, the kind of wrapping you use will add a bit more aesthetic since you can choose a particular color scheme or design pattern.

#2 Stairway to Christmas

If you have a banister on your stairs, the best way to accentuate it is to wrap it with some festive greenery. Although tinsel can work as well, I find that the natural element provides a bit more elegance and class to the decoration.

If you are going to use tinsel, I recommend finding two colors (i.e., red and gold) and intertwining them for a more dynamic effect.

#3 Indoor Wreaths

Most people think of these festive adornments as going on the front door, but the fact is that you can place them on any door in your home to add a splash of color and cheer. I find that wreaths work well on bedroom entryways, as well as large mirrors.

#4 Solar Christmas Lights

For some people, the hassle of trying to put up lights outside is too much to bother. However, if you go with a solar-powered option, then you don’t have to worry about a higher electric bill or running extension cords over the frozen ground.

With these lights, less is more. I like the way they look on trees, or they can accentuate the edges of your home. Also, feel free to wrap them in a spiral pattern in bushes and other plants.

#5 Dining Room Table

Although you probably will deck this out when guests arrive for Christmas dinner, the fact is that you should leave it decorated throughout the season. A colorful tablecloth and an attractive centerpiece can do wonders to liven up your dining room. Even a simple table runner down the middle can add a splash of festivity.

#6 Outdoor Statues

Inflatables and other yard decor can seem a bit tacky at times, even though they are really convenient. However, if you want to go with a more classic look, I suggest buying a small wooden statue instead. A nutcracker or a Santa model will become a focal point and add flair without needing too much else.

#7 Bows as Accents

If you’re on a budget, but you want a quick and easy way to add Christmas spirit to your home, buy some elegant wrapping bows. You want ones that are either made of cloth or look like they are, as opposed to the shiny plastic ones that you stick on a present.

Bows can accentuate all kinds of things in your home, from mirrors to doorways to furniture. Get different colors and see how they can make your space pop.

#8 Spray-Painted Pinecones

This will take a little bit of elbow grease, but the results can be magnificent. Find a bunch of pinecones, clean them up (make sure there aren’t any bugs or spiders inside) and then spray paint them different colors. I highly recommend red, gold, and green, but feel free to do whatever you like.

Once you have a good set of them, place them in small buckets or baskets around the house. They can fit well both inside and outside, and they will last for several years. If you’re really looking for a project, arrange the pinecones in a wreath.

#9 Foam Figures

Now we’re entering into the crafty portion of this list. If you buy styrofoam in large quantities, you can do all kinds of things with it to make your home stand out. Best of all, it’ll be a lot cheaper than store-bought decorations.

Some ideas include candy canes, Santa hats, and wreaths. Just cut the foam into the shape you want and then paint it. Also, feel free to add physical accessories (like a puffy top to the Santa hat) to make it stand out even more.

#10 Homemade Signs

If you can find scrap pieces of wood that would work as a rustic sign, then you can do a lot with them. Just be sure to sand the edges and stain them first so that they will last longer and won’t stick you with splinters.

When designing your signs, get as creative as you like. Buy some letter stencils so that you can make them look professional. Some examples I love are “Santa Stop Here,” “Reindeer Xing,” “‘Tis the Season,” and “Happy Holidays.” However, there are no right answers, so go nuts!

#11 Faux Gingerbread House

First of all, if you want to make the real thing, then don’t let me stop you. However, faking it provides a better option because you don’t have to worry about it getting moldy and you can use it year after year.

Simply cut cardboard for the foundation of the house (the walls and roof) and then use foam and other decorative elements to make it look real. Cotton balls work well as marshmallows, and colored foam balls can act as gumdrops. Also, since you’re using cardboard, feel free to build a more prominent structure.

#12 Paper Snowflakes

This is a fun activity for the kids, and it will provide you with easy decorations. I recommend using construction paper since it’s thicker and will hold up better. Once your kids have made their snowflakes feel free to either spray paint them or hang them as is.

#13 Homemade Stockings

As far as Christmas decorations go, stockings are the easiest to make on your own. All you need to do is get a large sheet of felt, cut out a stocking shape (twice) and then sew them together. Then, use glitter paint to write names on them, and glue white fur to the top to create a festive lining.

Also, stockings don’t have to be hung by the chimney with care; you can put them almost anywhere!

#14 Mini Sleds

This will require a bit of craftsmanship, but the design of a sled is relatively easy overall. The most important part is the curved front, so you will need a table saw that can cut that kind of piece.

Make a few miniature sleds that can go up on the mantle or other surfaces in your house. Paint the rails gold and the base of the sled red, and use decorative paint to add flourishes. These sleds can also be good for small Christmas figurines as well.

#15 Ball Ornaments

Normally, these go on the tree, but the fact is that you can do so much more with them. First, you can glue them together into a wreath (feel free to use a foam backing for support).

Second, you can hang them from the ceiling in groups, varying the height and color of each. Finally, they work well as table or mantle accents. Get creative and see what you can come up with, too.

#16 Plaid Attention

A quick and easy way to add some Christmas spirit to your home is to adorn it with plaid scarves or other materials. Tie a scarf around the back of a chair, or sew a pillow cover with raw sheets of it. A little goes a long way, so you don’t need much to get the effect.

#17 Painted Candle Holders

This is another super fast and easy method to add some Christmas colors to your home. Find some plain wooden candle holders and then spray paint them red, green, and gold. Also, feel free to add some small bows to enhance their aesthetic presence.

#18 Candy Accents

If you want a practical and efficient way to add Christmas to any room, buy some glass holders and fill them with holiday candy. Many wrapped chocolates will already be in green and red colors, so loading a bowl or an apothecary dish can make your space look even more attractive. Plus, you’ll always have a stash at your fingertips.

#19 Homemade Stars

Compared to the other crafty projects on this list, you can probably make these with just glue. Any kind of wood will work, including sticks from the yard. Simply glue them in a star shape, and you’re done. You don’t even have to paint them (although you certainly can). Accentuate them with a small bow if you like.

#20 Cinnamon Candles

These decorations will both provide a festive appearance while also adding a warm aroma to your home. All you have to do is wrap some cinnamon sticks around a candle. Use a red or green ribbon and tie it into a bow. That’s it!

Conclusion

This Christmas, let your inner creativity run wild. Look for inspiration in items you already have and try to turn them into something better. Mix and match styles and patterns and see what works best for your living space. Once again, there are no wrong answers.
